NAHAN: Despite rapid increase in road accidents in the rural areas of the district due to overloading, private vehicles and buses have failed to take a lesson. Though the police and the transport department are trying to rein in the malpractice, they have a hand tied at their back as people risk their lives by commuting in overloaded vehicles in the absence of adequate transportation facility. Recently, 11 people were killed when an overloaded private vehicle had rolled down a deep gorge near Timbi in the trans-Giri area of the district. Two of the injured died later at PGI Chandigarh, while one lost his legs. According to an estimate, 27 people have been killed in seven accidents in the past three months, most of which occurred due to overloading and rash driving. Most of the roads in remote areas are in a deplorable condition. The 900-km road-network of Trans-Giri area is in a dire need of repairs. An expert said that plying of overloaded vehicles on poor roads doubled the chances of accidents. Superintendent of police Rameshwar Thakur said the police were doing their job but the people too ought to know the consequences of travelling in overpacked vehicles. He also appealed to the people to avoid travelling in such vehicles for their own safety. Though the public works department (PWD) has installed crash barriers at certain places in remote areas of the district, such as dangerous curves, the people have demanded more such barriers. On the other hand, regional transport officer (RTO) Sunil Sharma said that standing instructions against overloading had been issued to private bus owners. Route permits of private buses could be cancelled if overloading continued in the future, he added.
